Are you looking for the right coach to work in your company?

Coaches: partners for a successful career

Coaches support their customers in making the most of their personal potentials and in successfully mastering all kinds of challenges, such as times of crisis or phases of professional reorientation. They help them achieve their career goals and reach a high level of work-life balance at the same time.

Which opportunities do coaches have on the labour market?

Coaches work on behalf of companies or private customers. They are particularly sought-after by companies undergoing change processes – from the implementation of innovative organisational structures up to the integration of new employees following mergers or acquisitions. Due to recent developments in the context of digitalisation, Industry 4.0 and the energy transition, our economy is facing major upheavals. As a consequence, coaches currently have excellent prospects on the labour market. Public authorities and other organisations within thepublic-sector are increasingly looking for coaches as well.

What are the tasks and responsibilities of coaches?

Coaches work for companies or private customers. They usually offer both private and group coaching services and thus help individual employees, teams or departments adapt to new work situations and resolve conflicts. In this context, they apply sophisticated psychological techniques and actively moderate change processes, taking into account the individual personality traits of the employees involved.

Coaching processes may take a few sessions only or continue for several years. Regardless of their duration, they involve the following steps:

  • Analysis of the current situation, possibly via shadow coaching in the customer’s everyday working life
  • Elaboration of an effective development concept, including the definition of milestones
  • Support with the implementation of new strategies via prompt feedback
  • Review of the achievement of the objectives

Which hard skills and soft skills should coaches have?

The profession "coach" is not legally protected, so basically anyone can work as a coach. Candidates wanting to start a successful career as a coach, however, should have comprehensive psychological expertise, in particular in the area of behavioural therapy. Besides, theoretical and practical business administration skills are advantageous.

In addition, coaches need to have certain soft skills:

  • Strong communication skills
  • A highly analytical way of thinking
  • Empathy
  • Assertiveness

What is the average salary of coaches?

In general, only large groups offer positions for in-house coaches, whom they employ in their HR departments. Here, the annual starting salaries usually amount to between EUR 30,000 and EUR 45,000. With increasing experience and activities involving a higher level of responsibility, such as executive coaching, in-house coaches may earn up to between EUR 70,000 and EUR 90,000 per year. Most coaches in Germany work as freelancers. Depending on their qualifications (e.g. an academic degree in psychology or business administration), experience and customers, their hourly rates usually range from EUR 80 to EUR 150; top coaches may even charge fees in the high three-digit range.
