Are you looking for a new project as a data architect? (m/f/d)

The tasks of data engineers can vary greatly from company to company. Have you gained a considerable experience as a freelance data engineer? Would you like to contribute your know-how to new projects in the near future and gain more experience in doing so? Then we should get to know each other and find the suitable project for you.

What are the tasks of data engineers?

Collecting, preparing and verifying data – that is the job of data architects. They transfer internal and external data sources into a data and analysis infrastructure by using technological possibilities. Data technicians use these for further analyses.

In summary, data engineers are responsible for

  • maintaining, preparing and saving current data,
  • preparing data for data scientists,
  • ensuring the quality, reliability and performance of the data infrastructure,
  • integrating data into a central, robust and flexible analysis infrastructure; and
  • modelling scalable database architectures (also cloud-based).

Which hard skills and soft skills should data engineers have?

In order to secure the data supply for companies, data engineers should master a couple of things.

Data engineers should possess these hard skills:

  • Software development and machine learning skills (e.g. SQL, NoSQL, Python, Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Kafka)
  • Technical understanding of big data infrastructures and technologies

Data engineers should have the following soft skills:

  • Analytical skills
  • Logical and abstract thinking
  • Very good communication skillsHigh level of team spirit
  • Time management and self-organisation skills

What educational background is required for data engineers?

Data engineers are usually technology-minded specialists. Therefore, an education or an academic degree in the technical field is required to work as a data engineer. An academic degree in computer science or business informatics with a focus on databases and software engineering facilitates the entry into data engineering.

However, a lateral entry is also possible with the required know-how. Very often, data technicians have previously worked in the IT infrastructure or software development. In this case, it is possible to choose another specialisation, e.g. from software development to data engineering.

Data engineer, data scientist or data analyst – what is the difference?

Whether it be engineers, scientists or analysts - all three of them deal with data. And yet there are differences. Data engineers operate at the beginning of the process in which everything revolves around big data or data processing and generation. Data scientists and data analysts finally work with this data.

Which opportunities do data engineers have on the labour market?

In the course of digitalisation, there is an increasing demand for qualified IT specialists. Because data is considered one of the most important "raw materials" of the 21st century. (Big) data engineers collect huge amounts of business-relevant data for large companies. The opportunities on the labour market are therefore very good, the same applies for data scientists. In Vienna alone, there are many vacancies for freelance data engineers at the moment. IT experts are not only sought after by companies in the field of information technology, but also industries such as healthcare, engineering and finance

Which salary can data engineers expect?

The salary depends on qualifications and experience. In the course of their career, data engineers can be promoted to senior data engineers, business intelligence architects and, eventually, (big) data architects. The gross annual salary is between EUR 45,000 and EUR 80,000, depending on qualifications and company size, but can also be much higher depending on qualifications and experience.
