The tasks of group accountants are varied and highly demanding. Group accountants work in the accounting departments of companies and are responsible for consolidation processes and financial statements of various subsidiaries. Depending on their experience, they work as junior or senior group accountants.

Which opportunities do group accountants have on the labour market?

Group accountants with an academic degree in economics and/or a balance sheet accountant's qualification have good prospects on the job market. Several years of professional experience at an auditing or tax consulting company or in the consolidation area of an industrial company is an advantage. Excellent knowledge of IFRS, the German Commercial Code (HGB) and MS Office as well as fluent oral and writing skills in English also further increase their chances.

What are the tasks and responsibilities of group accountants?

Group accountants are responsible for the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements according to HGB and IFRS and, at certain companies, also for the support of the subsidiaries abroad. In addition, they monitor and coordinate the individual budgets and are in charge of financial planning.

  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual statements of various companies and of consolidated financial statements
  • Execution of various consolidation steps
  • Acting as contact persons for specialist departments and (foreign) subsidiaries
  • Responsible for special topics/projects in the finance area
  • Dealing with tax-related questions in cooperation with tax consultants or financial authorities
  • Active involvement in the continuous optimisation of corporate financial processes

Which hard skills and soft skills should group accountants have?

Group accountants require an academic degree in business administration or economics or a similar qualification with specialisation in finance and accounting/taxation. Sound knowledge of HGB and IFRS is essential as well.
